Kybella®

Double Chin Reduction Without Surgery.

Kybella® Overview

Kybella® is composed of a specially designed chemical that destroys fat cells. The FDA has approved Kybella for the treatment of fat below the chin, medically known as submental fat, and commonly referred to as a double chin. The treatment involves the injection of an FDA approved chemical, deoxycholic acid, into the fatty tissue under the chin. This substance is chemically identical to material produced by the human body to break down fats. The chemical breaks apart the cell membrane of fat cells, destroying them, resulting in permanent removal of those fat cells.

Kybella® is delivered via a series of injections into the fatty area below the chin. The number of injections can vary, but generally are between twenty and fifty in number. The treatment area can be numbed with ice or a topical analgesic, but most people tolerate the injections with minimal discomfort. Injections are performed with a small needle, very similar to the needle used for Botox® injections or insulin injections. A minimum of two injection sessions is almost always required. Total injection sessions are usually four, but can be as many as six. The number of injection sessions depends upon a variety of factors, including the amount of fat to be dissolved, the goals of the patient, individual response to the injections and budget.

Since Kybella® is composed of a number of injections into the skin, good candidates for Kybella® are in general good health and have a normal wound healing response. People with compromised skin integrity or healing response, such as some diabetics or people with autoimmune disease, may not be candidates for Kybella®. Women who are pregnant or breast feeding are not candidates for Kybella®. People with prominent platysmal bands may not like the results of removing the fat in front of these anatomical structures. Kybella can increase the prominence of the platysmal bands. The wound healing response during Kybella® will retract skin to balance the loss of volume by removing fat. But Kybella® is not a treatment for loose skin (e.g., gobbler). Kybella® is not the optimal solution for those with large amounts of fat under the chin. Best results are achieved in those with mild to moderate submental fat. Liposuction or laser assisted liposuction may be an alternative for those patients with severe to extreme submental fat. Dr. Mike Bailey, a cosmetic surgeonlocated in The Cosmetic and Wellness Center with Spa 35, performs liposuction and we can coordinate a consultation with his office for the appropriate patients.

Kybella® Post Treatment Responses

After a treatment the injection site can become inflamed, swollen and tender. The first twenty-four hours after the treatment some patients are uncomfortable. Oral over the counter pain medication helps relieve the discomfort. Over time the discomfort subsides though the area remains swollen, sometimes up to three weeks after the treatment. Bruising can occur in or near the injection sites and the area can be red. Numbness can be experienced at the injection site. Some patients report the dissolved fat cells feel like a foreign substance under the chin that slowly decreases in size as it is expelled from the body.
